Promising to set a new standard for stripped-back controller keyboards, Arturia’s new KeyLab Essential 88 mk3 comes equipped with a full-size semi-weighted keybed along with a selection of pads, encoders and switches.
The company say that this latest model proves that a controller doesn’t need to be packed with complex controls or require menu-diving and complicated configuration processes to get up and running. The release brings the KeyLab Essential range’s 88-key controller in line with the recently launched 49- and 61-key mk3 models, and comes kitted out with new creative features such as a Scale and Chord Modes and a built-in arpeggiator, and is also equipped with a more versatile range of presets.
The semi-weighted keybed is joined by a set of eight pressure-sensitive pads that can be used to play MIDI notes or trigger clips and drum samples, and feature RGB backlights that allow them to be colour-coded. Encoders and faders offer hands-on control over instrument parameters, and the device can also be instantly switched to take over as a DAW controller, where a set of custom integration scripts ensure that key functions are mapped correctly to the hardware.
Being a part of Arturia’s Lab range means that the controller also integrates with a collection of the company’s award-winning software such as Analog Lab Pro, Pigments and V Collection, which offer a vast array of keys, synths, orchestral sounds and much more. Analog Lab Pro is included with each purchase, along with Ableton Live Lite, UVI’s Model D, Native Instruments’ The Gentleman, and trial subscriptions to Loopcloud and Melodics.
Connection to a host computer is taken care of by a USB-C port, and a five-pin DIN socket offers a MIDI out for connecting other hardware instruments and gear. There’s also a control input that will accept a sustain or expression pedal, or a footswitch.
