EXC-3 MIDI controller from Audnic

Designed specifically for orchestral programming

Three-fader MIDI controller orchestral dynamics expression vibrato hands-on control

Audnic are a UK-based company run by a retired BBC engineer, and currently manufacture small batches of the Expression Controller EXC-3, a three-fader MIDI controller that has been designed specifically for providing hands-on control over key parameters when composing with orchestral sample libraries.

The EXC-3 features a sturdy housing with a 2.5mm laser-cut stainless steel top panel, and uses three high-quality 100mm Bourns faders. It measures 165 x 71 x 25 mm and comes fitted with non-slip feet to ensure it stays firmly in place on a desktop or keyboard tray during use.

By default, the faders are mapped to MIDI CC numbers 11, 1 and 21, allowing it to control Expression, Dynamics and Vibrato parameters in Spitfire Audio’s range of sample libraries, although users are free to assign their own custom CC numbers and MIDI channels using a software application, if required.

The controller is a class-compliant device and so will work on either a Mac or PC without the need for any drivers, and will appear as either a Teensy MIDI or Opendeck device depending on the microcontroller used in the device — the company use two different options depending on availability, but both provide an identical set of functions. Models can be supplied with either a USB-A or USB-C connectors, and the controller has been tested with the USB-C ports found on new Apple Silicon-equipped Macs.

The EXC-3 is available now, priced at £149 including VAT. The company produce the controller in small batches, although sometimes have stock available for immediate shipping. More information can be found via the link below.
