In June 2022, Akai Pro launched the MPC Key 61, a workstation that pairs their popular hardware sampling platform with a keyboard — we deemed it to be more than the sum of its parts when we reviewed it in SOS July 24, click here to take a look at the article. Now, the company have expanded the line-up with the MPC Key 37, which packs much of the same functionality into a more compact footprint.

16 velocity-sensitive pads offer an authentic MPC experience.The latest addition to the range is a standalone device — although it can still be used alongside the (included) MPC2 software running on a computer — and features the same multi-core processing used in the MPC X SE and MPC Key 61, which offers sample-accurate chopping and trimming tools, and is paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Its 37 full-size synth-action keys are joined by 16 velocity-sensitive RGB-backlit pads that boast polyphonic aftertouch, delivering an authentic MPC experience with a wealth of expressive control possibilities, as well as a seven-inch high-resolution multi-touch display.
Along with the powerful sampling capabilities, the device also comes loaded with a collection of built-in virtual instruments and effects plug-ins. Eight instruments come pre-loaded, and users are able to select one additional instrument from Akai Pro’s premium collection, which includes emulations of classics such as the Moog Model D and JURA, the company’s take on the Roland Juno-60. Plug-ins such as Flavor Pro, AIR Delay Pro and Flex Beat provide some creative effects, and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity allows for fast updates, downloads and authorisations.
What’s more, the unit will also soon support Akai Pro’s upcoming MPC Stems feature, which will enable users to take their sampling to the next level by separating audio sources into individual instrument and vocal stems via the MPC2 desktop software application. /news/akai-mpcs-gain-stem-separation
I/O
Despite its size, the MPC Key 37 still comes packed with plenty of connectivity options, with the rear panel hosting a healthy selection of audio, MIDI and CV I/O. Four quarter-inch TRS sockets offer main stereo inputs and outputs, whilst a fifth carries a stereo headphone signal. Four 3.5mm TRS sockets then provide a total of eight CV/Gate outputs, and MIDI I/O can be found on a pair of five-pin DIN sockets.
Although much smaller than its 61-key counterpart, the MPC Key 37 still comes packed with plenty of I/O.
Three more quarter-inch TRS sockets allow users to connect expression and sustain pedals along with an external footswitch. There’s also an SD card slot to support additional external storage, and a USB-B port for connectivity with a host computer. DC power is delivered via an external PSU.
