WIMS update WoodSynth & WoodTroller

MIDI 2.0 support & enhanced Komplete Kontrol functions

WIMS WoodTroller WoodSynth MIDI 2.0 MPE synth controller iPad iOS App update

WIMS, or Woodman’s Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio, to give them their rather fantastic full name, have announced the release of updates for two of their software offerings. WoodSynth v3.6 brings MIDI 2.0 Property Exchange features to their iPad and macOS-based soft synth, whilst WoodTroller v2.6 can be used to add some user-requested functionality to Native Instruments’ recent Komplete Kontrol MK3 controller keyboards.

WoodSynth v3.6

WIMS’ software synthesizer now features MIDI 2.0 support, which brings with it compatibility with Korg’s new Keystage range of MIDI keyboards, the first controllers to implement the latest version of the MIDI specification. Thanks to the update, preset names along with parameter names and values in WoodSynth will be automatically passed to the Keystage displays — a feature which will also apply to any future controllers that adopt the latest MIDI spec. The developer have also introduced the following features as part of the new update:

  • Added a preset category drop-down which allows users to view a subset of their presets
  • Added a new Poly Aftertouch panel which allows multiple routing destinations
  • Poly Aftertouch / Pressure destinations now have an amount slider
  • Added Aftertouch/Pressure destinations for detuning Oscillators 1, 2 and 3
  • Added Aftertouch/Pressure destination for oscillator panning
  • Added Aftertouch/Pressure destination for ring mod of Oscillators 1 and 2
  • Added Aftertouch/Pressure destination for crossfade of Oscillators 1 and 2

WoodTroller v2.6

WoodTroller is an MPE-capable keyboard and macro controller application and plug-in that offers a wealth of configurable hands-on control over MIDI instruments, and recently gained MIDI 2.0 support with the introduction of v2.5. With the latest update, the developer has decided to tackle an issue raised by users of the latest Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol MK3 keyboards: the lack of a built-in MIDI output map.

Using a new VST3 version, it is now possible to insert WoodTroller as an effect in an instance of the Komplete Kontrol companion plug-in, where it will receive MIDI messages from the keyboards physical controls and allow them to be re-routed before being passed on to other instruments. Thanks to NI’s new NKS2 format, the parameter names set in WoodTroller will be reflected by the hardware’s display screens.

Along with the Komplete Kontrol functionality, the software has also gained the following new features:

  • Added 16 more rotaries (move keyboard down with arrow button).
  • Added 8 more buttons
  • Added new scaling mode — decreasing window size retains UI element sizes and allows users to pan to area of interest
  • Added morphing — up to four snapshots (values of the 24 rotaries) can be taken, and moving between two snapshots will cause the individual rotaries to change from their position in snapshot 1 to the position in snapshot 2
  • Added new UI morphing panel which allows users to drag the morphing position and take snapshots
  • Added MIDI CC inputs for the morphing X and Y controls (default CC11 and CC1)
  • Added MIDI CC inputs for the rotaries and buttons from NI keyboards’ default MIDI map
  • Added plug-in automation of rotaries and buttons

WoodSynth is supported on Macs running macOS 10.13 or later, and iPhones/iPod Touch/iPads running iOS/iPadOS 11.4 or higher, and is available as a standalone App, or AUv3, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in. WoodTroller is supported on Macs running macOS 10.13 or later, or iPads running iPadOS 12.0 and above, and is available as a standalone App or a VST3 plug-in which can be inserted into Komplete Kontrol.
